The strike began nearly a month ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2016\/10\/18\/why-are-harvard-dining-hall-workers-strike\/azkvOnNlU9DHwiFv6GcZsO\/story.html\">after more than four months of negotiations<\/a>. The new contract ensures that workers will receive an annual salary of around $35,000 and will not face an increase in their health insurance costs. According to Unite Here Local 26 President Brian Lang, quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2016\/10\/26\/striking-harvard-workers-got-everything-they-wanted-says-union\/OtLJHHoWcdXeiHbKi1WPIN\/story.html\">the Boston Globe<\/a>, the union \u201cachieved every goal, without exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Transgender Bathroom Case<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/supreme-court-takes-up-school-bathroom-rules-for-transgender-students\/2016\/10\/28\/0eece4ea-917f-11e6-a6a3-d50061aa9fae_story.html\">accepted a petition to hear arguments<\/a> in <em>G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board<\/em>, the case involving 17-year old transgender high school student Gavin Grimm. A decision in Grimm\u2019s favor would require public school systems to let transgender students use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/supreme-court-takes-up-school-bathroom-rules-for-transgender-students\/2016\/10\/28\/0eece4ea-917f-11e6-a6a3-d50061aa9fae_story.html\">whichever bathroom aligns with their gender identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Obama Grants Another Wave of Commutations<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After granting over 100 commutation petitions earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2016\/10\/27\/president-obama-grants-another-98-commutations-month-october\">President Obama commuted the sentences of another 98 individuals<\/a> on Thursday, including 42 individuals serving life sentences for drug offenses. After granting\u00a0872 commutations so far in 2016, Obama has set <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/ct-obama-commutations-20161027-story.html\">the single-year clemency record<\/a>, The Washington Post published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2016\/10\/27\/obama-commutes-sentences-of-98-inmates-thursday-42-had-life-terms\/\">a list<\/a> of all of those granted commutations last week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Protests\u00a0Continue at Standing Rock<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Police arrested <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-bady-malheur-standing-rock-20161028-story.html\">more than 140 people this week at Standing Rock<\/a>, where members of the Sioux Tribe and other demonstrators have been battling the development of the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-bady-malheur-standing-rock-20161028-story.html\">A number of opinion pieces<\/a> have pointed out the contradictions in the government\u2019s approach at Standing Rock and their approach to the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>In a show of solidarity from across the country, many supporters of the protest\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/01\/us\/why-your-facebook-friends-are-checking-into-standing-rock.html\">checked in to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation today<\/a> on Facebook in an effort to confuse law enforcement officials who have been tracking users on the social media site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting Ready for the General Election<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With just over a week to go before the General Election, more than 22 million people have already voted using early voting and absentee ballots. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2016\/10\/31\/us\/elections\/earlyvoters.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=b-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\">the New York Times<\/a>, \u201cacross all states with available data, early voting has increased among Hispanics and decreased among young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organizations such as the Lawyers\u2019 Committee for Civil Rights are also keeping close tabs on the election proceedings amidst <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/10\/31\/500115493\/civil-rights-groups-raise-concerns-about-poll-watchers-on-election-day\">fears about potential voter
