This week, activists support Ahmaud Arbery\u2019s family as the jury selection continues in the trial of his alleged killers, the Supreme Court fast tracks a hearing on Texas\u2019s abortion law, Howard University students protest housing conditions, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Rachel Levine makes history as the first openly transgender four-star admiral in America\u2019s history.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Assistant Secretary of Health Levine was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rachel-levine-transgender-four-star-admiral\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sworn in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the highest ranking official in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps on October 19th. She will lead the Corps\u2019 6,000 officers both in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the future of U.S. healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jury selection began last week in the trial over the killing of Ahmaud Arbery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Lawyers working on the case have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/blank-slate-jurors-county-shaken-arbery-slaying-80745759\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noted that the ideal juror will be difficult to find<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> due to the overwhelming media coverage of the case, resulting in multiple jurors placed in the pool with at least some knowledge of the case and those involved. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/24\/us\/ahmaud-arbery-trial-activists-support\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Activists from across the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have arrived in Brunswick, Georgia to support Arbery\u2019s family throughout the trial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Howard University students are protesting campus housing conditions by living in an on-campus tent city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Protesters say that they would<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/howard-university-students-protest-housing-conditions-campus-tent\/story?id=80710509\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> rather sleep outside than subject themselves to the \u201cunlivable\u201d conditions in their dorms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which include mold and insect and rodent infestations, as well as leaky ceilings and flooding. Since October 12th, students have taken over a campus center where a large sit-in actively continues, and students have received emails from the administration threatening consequences \u201cup to and including expulsion.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Former President Trump has announced his own social media website, \u201cTruth Social,\u201d which he plans to launch as an alternative to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media websites. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Announced on Wednesday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/truth-social-provide-trump-infusion-cash-critics-concerned\/story?id=80727452\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Truth Social<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be the first social media application of Trump\u2019s new company, Trump Media and Technology Group. Experts anticipate that the app will only be popular with Trump supporters, and that they could quickly become bored with the product when they find they have \u201cno one to spar with.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Supreme Court declines to block SB8, the Texas abortion law, but expedites its timeline. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Court set oral arguments for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2021\/10\/court-wont-block-texas-abortion-ban-but-fast-tracks-cases-for-argument-on-nov-1\/\">November 1st.<\/a> In choosing to take the case before lower courts make their rulings, the Court guarantees that the law will stay in effect at least until it announces its decision on the merits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to This Week in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
