{"id":2126,"date":"2011-04-02T11:41:56","date_gmt":"2011-04-02T15:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/?p=2126"},"modified":"2016-11-17T08:14:48","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T13:14:48","slug":"doj-investigates-police-brutality-in-seattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/doj-investigates-police-brutality-in-seattle\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ Investigates Police Brutality in Seattle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week, the DOJ Civil Rights Division announced that it was <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.cnn.com\/2011-03-31\/justice\/washington.seattle.police_1_officer-shot-aclu-letter-police-officer?_s=PM:CRIME\">launching a formal investigation into use of force policies in the Seattle Police Department<\/a>. The DOJ did not identify specific incidents that prompted their investigation, but said their investigation would be focused on excessive use of force and racial profiling.<\/p>\n<p>This investigation follows a series of violent incidents last year that resulted in injury or death to minority suspects. In April of 2010, a Seattle Police officer was videotaped stomping on and cursing at a Latino man detained during a robbery investigation. A jaywalking stop led to a Seattle Police officer punching a teenage African-American girl in the face in June, 2010. In August, a Native American carrying a closed carving knife was fatally shot by Seattle Police, and the city declined to press charges against the officer despite a police internal investigation
