{"id":2133,"date":"2011-04-04T13:27:34","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T17:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/?p=2133"},"modified":"2016-11-17T08:14:39","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T13:14:39","slug":"conservative-groups-file-foia-requests-for-professors-emails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/conservative-groups-file-foia-requests-for-professors-emails\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservative Groups File FOIA Requests for Professors&#039; Emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steven Greenhouse in the <em>New York Times <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/30\/education\/30professors.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported on March 29<\/a> that the Mackinac Center\u00a0had filed FOIA requests for the work e-mails of professors at three public universities in Michigan: Michigan State, Wayne State, and the University of Michigan. \u00a0In searching for mentions in the e-mails of such terms as &#8220;labor unions&#8221; and &#8220;Scott Walker,&#8221; the conservative&#8211;though nominally non-partisan&#8211;think tank seems to be furthering an effort to embarrass academic figures by unmasking their ties to, or affinity for, the labor movement.<\/p>\n<p>These FOIA requests follow only shortly after the Republican Party in Wisconsin issued similar demands for the emails of University of Wisconsin professor William Cronon &#8212; a move discussed at great length recently by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/28\/opinion\/28krugman.html?scp=1&amp;sq=cronon&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Krugman<\/a>. There is little doubt that state university professors, as public employees, are technically subject to such freedom of information requests. Nonetheless, as Krugman noted, these incidents represent a disturbing assault on academic freedom and a potential threat to the independent political culture of public universities which often thrives
