Supreme Court strikes down gay adoption ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Arkansas Supreme Court has\u00a0struck down\u00a0a state law barring unmarried gay and straight couples from adopting or serving as foster parents.\u00a0 The Court ruled that the law\u00a0was unconstitutional because\u00a0\u00a0it\u00a0 &#8220;burdens the privacy rights of \u2018opposite-sex and same-sex individuals\u2019 who engage in private, consensual sexual conduct in the bedroom by foreclosing their eligibility to foster or adopt children\u2019\u2019\u00a0 The law at issue was approved by voters in a 2008 statewide ballot initiative.\u00a0 The law,\u00a0while neutral on its face, was intended to target gay couples.\u00a0\u00a0It would have\u00a0effectively banned gay and lesbian couples from adopting or fostering children because they can not legally marry in Arkansas.\u00a0 The ACLU brought the suit on behalf of a group of families,\u00a0while\u00a0the Alliance Defense Fund, an alliance of Christian lawyers, defended the law in court.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wall Street Journal Law Blog\"
