{"id":6606,"date":"2013-09-17T18:58:52","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T22:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/?p=6606"},"modified":"2016-11-16T19:52:19","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T00:52:19","slug":"steven-hawking-weighs-in-on-assisted-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/steven-hawking-weighs-in-on-assisted-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Steven Hawking Weighs in on Assisted Suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year \u00a0I wrote a blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/2012\/11\/02\/suicide-at-the-ballot-box-vote-yes-on-question-2\/\">here<\/a> advocating for the passage of a referendum on assisted suicide in Massachusetts. \u00a0In it, I argued that the religious, philosophical and spiritual complexities of the immensely personal issue should prevent the government from making a choice on the issue for its citizens. \u00a0Today, the BBC released a brief interview in which Steven Hawking, meant to promote an upcoming documentary. \u00a0In it, Hawking endorses physician assisted suicide:\u00a0&#8220;I think those who have a terminal illness and are in great pain should have the right to choose to end their lives, and those who help them should be free from prosecution. \u00a0We don&#8217;t let animals suffer so why humans. \u00a0But there must be safeguards that the person concerned genuinely want to end their life and they&#8217;re not being pressurized into it and not have it done without their knowledge and consent, as would have been done to me [when I was on life support following a bought of pneumonia].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The interview is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-24120574\">here<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZnePdPmxjtE\">documentary<\/a> will be released on September 20.<\/p>\n<p>Question 2 was narrowly defeated at the polls here in Massachusetts last year, but Professor Hawking&#8217;s views are a notable addition to the ongoing dialogue.<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2013\/09\/Hawking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6607\" title=\"Hawking\" src=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2013\/09\/Hawking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2013\/09\/Hawking.jpg 200w, https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2013\/09\/Hawking-38x55.jpg 38w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year \u00a0I wrote a blog post here advocating for the passage of a referendum on assisted suicide in Massachusetts.
