Welcome to the first weekly CRCL news roundup.\u00a0 Each week, a contributor to the CRCL blog will pick out a few interesting items from the past week concerning civil rights and civil liberties.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are a few articles to start off your week:<\/p>\n

1. \u201cScenes from a Militarized America: Iowa Family \u2018Terrorized\u2019\u201d from the Washington Post<\/a><\/p>\n

A surprising video from Iowa of police in full battle gear using a battering ram to enter a home in search of someone suspected of credit card fraud.\u00a0\u00a0 While inside, police rip out and cover up the family\u2019s security cameras to prevent footage of their search.<\/p>\n

2. \u201cLouisiana Abortion \u2018Emergency\u2019 Rule Fight Ends for Now\u201d from Jezebel<\/a><\/p>\n

An update to recent regulations in Louisiana that would have threatened to drastically limit access to abortions.<\/p>\n

3. \u201cDC Council Votes to Decriminalize Pot\u201d from CBS affiliate WUSA.<\/a><\/p>\n

DC\u2019s city council passes a preliminary vote to decriminalize possession of an ounce or less of marijuana, but only within one\u2019s home and not in public, with a final vote to come later this month.<\/p>\n

4. \u201cThe Eagle has Landed\u201d from Outsports.com<\/a><\/p>\n

An exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the events leading up to NFL Draft prospect Michael Sam publicly coming out.\u00a0 Sam, the SEC\u2019s sack leader in 2013, would be the first active openly gay male athlete in a major American sports league (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB).\u00a0 Jason Collins (NBA) came out this past summer, but has not been an active member of a roster since his announcement.<\/p>\n

5. \u201cA Florida County Spent Over $5 Million on Jailing Homeless People.\u00a0 It Could\u2019ve Spent Less on Shelter\u201d from The Huffington Post<\/a><\/p>\n

Results from a study of \u201cfrequent-flyer\u201d arrests\u2014homeless individuals arrested for homeless-related crimes\u2014in Osceola County, Florida reveal that the county would have spent 35% less if it had provided \u201cpermanent supportive housing and ongoing case management\u201d instead.<\/p>\n
