{"id":8400,"date":"2014-11-24T17:05:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T22:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/?p=8400"},"modified":"2014-11-24T17:05:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-24T22:05:00","slug":"nov-24-weekly-news-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/nov-24-weekly-news-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"Nov. 24: Weekly News Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/hls-divest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8401\" src=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/hls-divest.jpg\" alt=\"hls divest\" width=\"675\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/hls-divest.jpg 675w, https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/hls-divest-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/hls-divest-82x55.jpg 82w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students Sue the Harvard Corporation to Compel Divestment from Fossil Fuels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After two years of urging Harvard to publicly discuss divestment from fossil fuels, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.divestproject.org\/about-the-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\">group of Harvard students<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/20\/us\/harvard-students-move-fossil-fuel-divestment-fight-to-court.html?ref=us&amp;_r=2%20\" target=\"_blank\">sued<\/a> the Harvard Corporation, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.divestproject.org\/frequently-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\">alleging that the threat of global warming is so serious and so immediate that Harvard\u2019s investments in fossil fuel companies constitute a breach of its duties as a non-profit corporation<\/a>.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>President Obama\u2019s Executive Action on Immigration Policies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On November 20, President Obama took one of the most significant actions to date in his presidency: he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/transcript-obamas-immigration-speech\/2014\/11\/20\/14ba8042-7117-11e4-893f-86bd390a3340_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced his plan<\/a> to take executive action on immigration. He intends to prioritize deportation of criminals and recent arrivals, while granting a temporary reprieve from deportation to those undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least five years, have children in the country, pass a criminal background check, and are \u201cwilling to pay [their] fair share of taxes.\u201d Supporters rejoiced, but\u00a0backlash to the announced policy was swift, from those opposing the new policy, from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/22\/us\/republicans-immigration-obama.html\" target=\"_blank\"> those opposing such wide-sweeping executive action<\/a>, and also from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/immigrants-rights\/aclu-comment-president-obamas-immigration-executive-actions-announcement-0\" target=\"_blank\">groups who believe Obama\u2019s policy leaves vulnerable millions more immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See also this highly entertaining <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JUDSeb2zHQ0&amp;list=UUqFzWxSCi39LnW1JKFR3efg\" target=\"_blank\">SNL skit<\/a> on the news story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/24\/opinion\/will-texas-kill-an-insane-man.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>\u201cWill Texas Kill an Insane Man?\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Texas is preparing to execute schizophrenic inmate Scott Panetti by lethal injection on December 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. His case has traveled through the judicial system for almost 20 years. Just one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/jurisprudence\/2014\/11\/texas_execution_of_scott_panetti_why_a_schizophrenic_man_will_be_put_to.html\" target=\"_blank\">example<\/a> of the many\u00a0egregious errors throughout his trials: in 1994, Panetti\u2019s lawyer was unable to communicate with his client for two years due to Panetti\u2019s delusional thinking, and several psychiatrists reported that Panetti was unfit to stand trial. One doctor found that Panetti did not know the year or the current president, and still Panetti was declared competent to stand trial. Advocates are rightly infuriated that Texas would execute someone who does not have the capacity to understand the implications of his actions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ferguson Grand Jury Decision Imminent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/11\/24\/ferguson-grand-jury-deliberations\/19474907\/\" target=\"_blank\">5pm CT on November 24, 2014<\/a>, the prosecutor presiding over the Ferguson grand jury plans to announce whether police officer Darren Wilson will face charges for fatally shooting unarmed teenager Michael Brown. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/heather-ann-thompson\/violence-in-postverdict-f_b_6189192.html\" target=\"_blank\">declared a state of emergency<\/a> in anticipation of protests and unrest that may follow the announcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.inquisitr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2014\/11\/snl-schoolhouse-rock-665x385.jpg\"
