{"id":8925,"date":"2015-10-05T13:57:42","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T17:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/?p=8925"},"modified":"2015-10-05T14:05:42","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T18:05:42","slug":"october-5-2015-weekly-news-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/crcl\/october-5-2015-weekly-news-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"October 5, 2015: Weekly News Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lawmakers\u2019 Debate on Gun Control\u00a0Measures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After another mass shooting last week, President Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2015\/10\/01\/watch-president-obamas-statement-shooting-oregon\" target=\"_blank\">expressed<\/a> frustration with the current gun control narrative, stating \u201cour thoughts and prayers are not enough.\u201d\u00a0Some reformers are seeking solutions in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/05\/us\/politics\/everytown-for-gun-safety-proposes-regulations-to-clarify-laws.html?ref=us&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">existing legislation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/a-gun-free-society\/2015\/10\/04\/6da29040-69c4-11e5-9ef3-fde182507eac_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">public health policies<\/a>. Others seek more drastic measures in hopes of creating a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/a-gun-free-society\/2015\/10\/04\/6da29040-69c4-11e5-9ef3-fde182507eac_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">gun-free society<\/a>,\u201d despite almost no support from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/10\/conservatives-gun-control-and-distrust\/408643\/\" target=\"_blank\">conservative<\/a> gun owners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reforming the Criminal Justice System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/10\/lynch-wif-tk\/408604\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> $53 million in grant funding to organizations that work to reduce recidivism.\u00a0This coincides with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/10\/will-criminal-justice-actually-be-reformed\/408538\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate proposal<\/a> to reduce mandatory minimums, lessen the use of solitary confinement, increase parole opportunities, and bolster re-entry programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cybersecurity Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2015\/10\/privacy-in-the-digital-age\/407887\/\" target=\"_blank\">Studies<\/a> show Americans enjoy the convenience of the internet, but remain worried about their privacy&#8211;a warranted concern after government data breaches this past year. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/federal-eye\/wp\/2015\/10\/01\/21-5-million-feds-others-being-officially-notified-of-personal-information-cybertheft-and-id-theft-services\/\" target=\"_blank\">final count<\/a> has been released of those affected by the cyberhacks. Victims of the attack, mostly federal government employees, contractors, applicants and their families, will be receiving free identity and credit monitoring services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alabama&#8217;s Voter ID Laws<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2015\/10\/02\/democrats-say-alabamas-closure-of-drivers-license-offices-could-make-it-harder-for-black-residents-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alabama voter ID laws<\/a> went into effect, requiring a government-issued ID to vote. Since then, Alabama has shut down 31 satellite driver\u2019s-license offices in majority black counties. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials blame budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Push for Prosecution in Campus Sexual Assault Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As freshmen settle into their first semesters in college, some\u00a0call for law enforcement involvement in the resolution and prosecution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/rethinking-how-we-deal-with-campus-sexual-assault\/2015\/10\/04\/8b69c744-6aa3-11e5-9bfe-e59f5e244f92_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">campus sexual assault<\/a> incidents and for the passing\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Safe Campus Act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Supreme Court Docket<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This term,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/oral_arguments\/argument_calendars.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">SCOTUS<\/a> will be deciding many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/05\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-prepares-to-take-on-politically-charged-cases.html?ref=us\" target=\"_blank\">civil rights and civil liberties-related cases<\/a>\u00a0concerning\u00a0public unions, class actions, affirmative action in higher education, the death penalty, and possibly
