{"id":2771,"date":"2010-06-14T09:00:55","date_gmt":"2010-06-14T13:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/site\/?p=2771"},"modified":"2011-05-23T13:19:49","modified_gmt":"2011-05-23T17:19:49","slug":"online_51_hamoudi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/2010\/06\/online_51_hamoudi\/","title":{"rendered":"Identitarian Violence and Identitarian Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Introduction*<\/h5>\n<p>Over the past few years, I have observed numerous commentators, pundits, and\u00a0self-appointed experts of nearly every political stripe describe their views on whether\u00a0or not the U.S. was wise to have \u201callowed\u201d early elections in Iraq. \u00a0Generally the\u00a0answer to the question tends to lie in the affirmative among defenders of the Bush\u00a0administration, and in the negative among its detractors. \u00a0After living in Iraq for\u00a0nearly four cumulative years following the fall of the Saddam regime, it appears to me\u00a0that any cogent response to the question is far more nuanced than the yes or no\u00a0answer it seems designed to solicit.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, I offer this skeletal answer, the basis of which I will seek to explain\u00a0in this Essay: This is the wrong question to ask. \u00a0The question, rather, should be, to\u00a0the extent that early elections take place in Iraq, what is it that the U.S. and the\u00a0international community might do to limit any civil conflict that might arise as a\u00a0result, and what are the costs associated with any such policy?<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>* This excerpt does not include citations.
