{"id":298,"date":"2007-12-10T19:58:56","date_gmt":"2007-12-11T02:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/digest\/archives\/298"},"modified":"2010-08-09T15:01:21","modified_gmt":"2010-08-09T19:01:21","slug":"secretary-general-commemorates-human-rights-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/2007\/12\/secretary-general-commemorates-human-rights-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Secretary-General Commemorates Human Rights Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 10 was UN <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/events\/humanrights\/2007\/\">Human Rights Day<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon used the occasion to remind the world that the freedoms upheld in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must apply universally: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Declaration remains as relevant today as it did on the day it was adopted,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Mr. Ban said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But the fundamental freedoms enshrined in it are still not a reality for everyone. Too often, Governments lack the political will to implement international norms they have willingly accepted.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>December 10, 2008 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Declaration.\u00c2\u00a0 Mr. Ban hopes that the world will use year leading up to the anniversary to reinvigorate efforts to ensure that the document&#8217;s freedoms apply to all.<\/p>\n<p>UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour gave a separate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unhchr.ch\/huricane\/huricane.nsf\/view01\/42D4140DF46806F4C12573AD002A2F82?opendocument\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The full text of the Declaration, adopted by the General
