{"id":7293,"date":"2014-02-10T06:39:49","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T11:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/?p=7293"},"modified":"2014-02-10T06:39:49","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T11:39:49","slug":"instilling-civic-duty-in-afghanistan-and-preventing-brain-drain-227-12pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/2014\/02\/instilling-civic-duty-in-afghanistan-and-preventing-brain-drain-227-12pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Instilling Civic Duty in Afghanistan and Preventing Brain Drain (2\/27, 12pm)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Instilling Civic Duty in Afghanistan and Preventing Brain Drain\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>When:\u00a0Feb. 27, 2014, noon<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Where:\u00a0HLS, WCC 2004<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What:\u00a0Shabana Basij-Rasikh is a 23-year-old co-founder of School of Leadership-Afghanistan (SOLA). \u00a0Shabana got much of her education under the Taliban by traveling across the city just to sneak into a crowded living room dressed as a boy to learn. \u00a0A United States program called YES! sent Shabana to Middlebury College in Massachusetts, where she graduated magna cum laude. \u00a0She returned to Afghanistan to co-found the country\u2019s first girl\u2019s boarding school with an American man, Ted Achilles. \u00a0Ted had become disenchanted with the U.S. efforts to send Afghan kids to foreign universities because, while Shabana was a success story, many students did not return to Afghanistan. \u00a0SOLA&#8217;s goal, after delivering an education and preparing girls to attend college abroad, is to imbue a sense of civic duty in the girls so they will want to return and help heal their country.
