{"id":909,"date":"2009-04-05T12:34:42","date_gmt":"2009-04-05T16:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/digest\/?p=909"},"modified":"2011-03-09T15:21:44","modified_gmt":"2011-03-09T19:21:44","slug":"perus-fujimori-claims-innocence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/2009\/04\/perus-fujimori-claims-innocence\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru&#039;s Fujimori Claims Innocence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori defended his innocence with regards to human rights abuse claims in a Rio De Janeiro court. \u00a0Taking the stand in his own defense, Fujimori vehemently denied responsibility for the murders of 25 people and the kidnappings of 2 others. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These charges stem from alleged actions taken by the Peruvian government under Fujimori in response to a series of bloody guerrilla attacks in Peru in the early 1990s. Defending his policies and actions, Fujimori declared, &#8220;I did nothing wrong . . . The Peru that I inherited was a disaster. It was a Peru that had to be rescued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerns over Fujimori&#8217;s health have lengthened the trial, now in its fifteenth month. \u00a0Fujimori is believed to be the world\u2019s first democratically elected former president to be tried for human rights violations in his own country.<\/p>\n<p>For further information, please click <a
