{"id":9468,"date":"2021-05-17T12:22:49","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T16:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/?p=9468"},"modified":"2023-09-29T18:55:48","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T22:55:48","slug":"expanding-the-jurisdiction-of-the-international-criminal-court-articles-by-parliamentarians-for-global-action-in-cooperation-with-hls-advocates-for-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/ilj\/2021\/05\/expanding-the-jurisdiction-of-the-international-criminal-court-articles-by-parliamentarians-for-global-action-in-cooperation-with-hls-advocates-for-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Expanding the Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court: Articles by Parliamentarians for Global Action in Cooperation with HLS Advocates for Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>International Criminal Law (\u201cICL\u201d) has been the branch of Public International Law that saw the most impressive developments in the last 30 years.\u00a0The International Law &amp; Human Rights team at Parliamentarians for Global Action (\u201cPGA\u201d) joined forces with a group of students\u00a0from the Harvard Law School Advocates for Human Rights (\u201cAdvocates\u201d) to launch a project that identifies some of the most innovative ideas and proposals that could further contribute to the progressive development of International Criminal Law.\u00a0The project\u2019s current focus is on expanding the International Criminal Court\u2019s jurisdiction in the following areas: development of the Court\u2019s jurisdiction on environmental crimes and human trafficking; the expansion of the Court\u2019s personal jurisdiction to corporations; and the creation of an additional procedural avenue through a hybrid chamber.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In times of change for the ICC, this project\u00a0amplifies the voices of young students and practitioners,\u00a0as well as more seasoned lawyers and experts. In the words of a former student of Harvard Law School, Ben Ferencz, who became a Prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials when he was 27 years old and, years later,\u00a0played a crucial role in the establishment\u00a0of the ICC, the incorporation of the crime of aggression into the Rome Statute,\u00a0and the activation of the Court&#8217;s jurisdiction over the same,\u00a0\u201cNever give up. Never give up. Never give up.\u201d\u00a0Like Mr. Ferencz who continues to develop ICL at the age of over 101, students and contributors to\u00a0this project wish to advance international criminal justice to combat impunity in the face of atrocity crimes which pose a global threat to humankind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[hr gap=&#8221;30&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color:
