{"id":2108,"date":"2018-10-30T10:21:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T14:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/?p=2108"},"modified":"2023-07-25T11:44:22","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T15:44:22","slug":"amazon-studios-settles-with-artists-estate-before-highly-anticipated-suspiria-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/2018\/10\/amazon-studios-settles-with-artists-estate-before-highly-anticipated-suspiria-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Studios Settles with Artist\u2019s Estate Before Highly Anticipated Suspiria Release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2018\/10\/44601525515_7d53bb6299_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2109\" src=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2018\/10\/44601525515_7d53bb6299_z-300x162.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2018\/10\/44601525515_7d53bb6299_z-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/jsel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2018\/10\/44601525515_7d53bb6299_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnews.com\/2018\/10\/26\/ana-mendieta-estate-amazon-studios-reach-settlement-suspiria-copyright-infringement-suit\/\">Amazon Studios has settled a copyright dispute\u00a0<\/a>with Ana Mendieta\u2019s estate over images in <em>Suspiria<\/em>, the highly anticipated Luca Guadagnino film set to be theatrically released in New York and Los Angeles this weekend.\u00a0 Mendieta\u2019s estate filed suit against the studio in federal court in Seattle last month, claiming several images in the film were too similar to her work.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of Mendieta\u2019s estate initially sent Amazon Studios a cease-and-desist letter after noticing the striking similarities in the film\u2019s first trailer.\u00a0 The studio then cut the images in question from the final version of the film, but an agent affiliated with the estate identified eight additional similarities during a screening of the entire film in September, prompting the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Mendieta, a Cuban-American artist that passed away in 1985, is <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/suspiria-copyright-case-amazon-studios-1202992394\/\">regarded as a prominent member of the radical feminist art movement\u00a0<\/a>of the 1970\u2019s. During <em>Suspiria\u2019s <\/em>press tour, Guadagnino <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnews.com\/2018\/10\/26\/ana-mendieta-estate-amazon-studios-reach-settlement-suspiria-copyright-infringement-suit\/\">claimed that he drew inspiration\u00a0<\/a>from this very
