Executions: Courtroom Evidence or TV Content?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #505050\"><em>Jessica Jackson<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #505050\">After the Georgia execution of Andrew DeYoung was taped last month,\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #3f6dcf\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110818104302\/http:\/\/sentencing.typepad.com\/sentencing_law_and_policy\/2011\/07\/why-shouldnt-georgia-lethal-injection-and-all-executions-be-recorded-on-video.html\">many people<\/a>\u00a0have asked why such tapings are not a routine practice or a requirement. \u00a0Given the vast number of problems that have occurred during lethal injection executions, including difficulty locating intimates\u2019 veins; improper training, which has led to blown veins or incorrect mixtures of chemicals being given; equipment failures; and deficiencies with the drugs themselves; it is no surprise that\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #3f6dcf\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110818104302\/http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/videotaped-execution-lethal-injection-set-thursday\/story?id=14118367\">some lawyers<\/a>\u00a0are making this request.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #505050\">But the concept of taping executions raises several questions. \u00a0Who would be allowed to review the tapes? \u00a0Can the condemned inmate object and prevent recording of his or her execution? \u00a0At what point in the execution would the taping begin? \u00a0While some people believe that the tapes should be viewed only\u00a0by those directly involved in lethal injection litigation, others have discussed \u00a0using images of executions to demonstrate to the public that such executions often result in extremely painful deaths. \u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #3f6dcf\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110818104302\/http:\/\/mattmangino.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/should-executions-be-broadcast-part-ii.html\">One blog<\/a>\u00a0went as far as to suggest that if routinely taped, lethal-injection executions may end up being broadcast to the public as \u201creality tv.\u201d \u00a0While executions have never been aired in the US, executions have been\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #3f6dcf\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110818104302\/http:\/\/www.fdp.dk\/act\/guatemala.htm\">televised in Guatemala<\/a>\u00a0in the past, and several terrorist groups have used the internet to publicly distribute footage of their hostages being executed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #505050\">The tape of Mr. DeYoung remains in judicial custody for now and is intended to assist a GA judge determine the constitutionality of Georgia\u2019s lethal injection protocols. \u00a0Whether this tape (or future tapes) will be used for any other purposes remains
