{"id":78,"date":"2009-09-09T12:55:59","date_gmt":"2009-09-09T19:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.harvardnsj.com\/?p=78"},"modified":"2009-09-09T12:55:59","modified_gmt":"2009-09-09T19:55:59","slug":"climate-change-as-national-security-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.harvard.edu\/nsj\/2009\/09\/climate-change-as-national-security-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change as National Security Statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Tuesday, September 8th<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today a group of government leaders issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psaonline.org\/downloads\/Climate.pdf\">statement<\/a> discussing climate change as a national security issue and calling for a bipartisan plan to address the U.S.&#8217;s role.<\/p>\n<p>The group of 32 signatories &#8211; including eight former Senators, three former National Security Advisors, two former Secretaries of State, a former Secretary of Defense, and both the Chair and Vice Chair of the 9\/11 Commission &#8211; was convened by the Partnership for a Secure America (PSA). A panel of members discussed the need for a bipartisan bill to reduce emissions leading to climate change, in order to improve foreign opinion of the U.S. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZXFnONadzFQ&amp;playnext=1&amp;playnext_from=QL\">video<\/a> of Senator Joseph Lieberman&#8217;s remarks can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psaonline.org\/article.php?id=554\">PSA&#8217;s website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The statement calls for \u201ca clear, comprehensive, realistic and broadly bipartisan plan\u201d that will allow the U.S. to lead the development of a global strategy to mitigate and adapt to the climate change crisis, according to the statement.
