Logging Off: A Comprehensive Agenda for Social Media and Mental Health

Senator Katie Boyd Britt • The advent of social media in the first decade of the 21st century promised a new era of connectedness; instead, we are more isolated than ever — especially our youth. The ubiquity of social media platforms has played a leading role in a mental health crisis plaguing American adolescents. As a United States Senator, I believe our government has a compelling interest in acting to counter these disturbing trends. In this Essay, I discuss a comprehensive policy agenda the U.S. government should pursue to safeguard young Americans from the harms social media can cause.
