The Harvard Journal of Law and Gender is the nation’s oldest continuously publishing feminist law journal. JLG is an intersectional feminist publication, devoted to the advancement of feminist jurisprudence and the study of law and gender. Student Notes should seek to clarify legal issues that have gendered aspects and implications, confront new challenges to full social equality, and explore the interconnections of race, class, sexuality, nationality, ability, and gender in the law.
We will be selecting up to two submissions for publication in Volume 50 of JLG, which will go to print in the late spring or early summer of 2027. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and this form will close on June 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
If your Note is selected for any other award or publication, please let us know immediately by emailing hlsjlg@gmail.com. We will do our best to accommodate expedite requests.
In addition to the Student Note Competition, we also welcome student submissions of short pieces to our online content at any time.
After reviewing the submission information below, please SUBMIT YOUR PIECE HERE and direct any additional questions to hlsjlg@gmail.com.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- If selected for publication, Authors must be willing to comply with the JLG editing and revision process, which will take place throughout Fall 2026 and early Spring 2027.
- Authors must be current students at or 2026 graduates of a U.S. or international law school. Authors need not be pursuing or have graduated from a J.D. program at their law school.
- Notes should be 20–60 pages in length (including footnotes, but not including an abstract, title page(s), etc.). All text should be in Times New Roman. Above-line text should be 12 pt. font and double-spaced. Below-line text should be 10 pt. font and single-spaced. Notes falling outside this length range may be considered, but their length will weigh against them in the selection process. Additionally, if selected, authors will be expected to independently add to or cut content from their Note to comply with this length requirement.
- Citations should be formatted in footnotes.
- Notes should include an abstract.
- Authors should make a concerted effort to comply with the Bluebook. A clear lack of effort to comply with the Bluebook will weigh against a Note during the selection process.
- Notes should be uploaded to this submission form as a Word document that is void of all identifying information removed and that is titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_StudentNote.
